6 Reasons You Should Offer Work Experience to Students After years spent studying and racking up thousands in debt to achieve a degree you would think the first thing a student has to do is get a job before theyve even graduated. But not everyone thinks so. In fact Mary Curnock Cook, the outgoing head of British university admissions service UCAS, says students should take their time before finding a job. She says that many youngsters needed time to find their career niche. And it was important they had some down time after studying. Recently, the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) said that most employers claimed that  graduates arent skilled enough  to join the world of work. So how can employers help graduates make the transition from the world of studying to work? The most practical answer is to offer students work experience. And these are the reasons why its beneficial to employers: 1. It helps your other employees Having someone on a  work experience placement means they need supervision, guidance and even a mentor.  This helps to boost your teams morale as it shows them that you trust them enough to be responsible. It also helps your  employees develop their own supervisory skills which will help you and them should a senior position arise that they could be considered for. 2. Its good branding for the company If youve got  a really effective and organised work placement scheme that young people genuinely feel they can benefit from then they will soon be telling their friends, who will be telling their friends.  This means you get to choose from the best young talent out there. Word of mouth is one of the best forms of marketing out there and its free.  Your company’s reputation for investing in young people will be ranked quite highly  so more people will want to come and work for you. 3. It doesnt cost you financially (no, really) You dont legally have to pay for people on work experience students. That doesnt mean you can take advantage of a free workforce and exploit them as that would just be wrong, but most people understand that work experience is just that experience. Some companies do offer to pay for travel expenses or provide lunch vouchers but if it means you can spot future talent then its a small price to pay. 4. Enthusiasm Now unless the person has been brought to your company kicking and screaming because they dont want to be there,  most people on work experience come with a bag full of enthusiasm and positivity and often brimming with new ideas. 5. Its a great recruitment strategy Theres no doubt the workforce is getting younger and if thats where you see your company going in the future then by offering work experience programmes is a great way to go about this. Its easier to spot talent when you can see them in the work place and there is nothing stopping you from offering them a permanent role such as an apprenticeship or part time roles whilst they are at university? Young people are also like sponges and will soak up what they learn at your company. This will reduce your cost of bringing in more experienced, skilled professionals. 6. Helps young people to mature Most people on work experience will never have been exposed to the world of work and most of their knowledge about the world of work will be classroom-based or something theyve read on the internet or social media. So, when they do work experience, they tend to mature and are able to make more informed choices about their future career. Theyre also  more likely to stay  within that industry and, if you are in a position to offer permanent work such as apprenticeships or graduate positions, that person is more likely to remain with your company. Whether  students should secure work before theyve even left university or wait until theyve found the right career for them is something that can be debated all day long. But as an employer it wouldnt harm you to give them a helping hand now and again.

On the other hand, when writing about standard software, I don't know if this is a good idea for you because you can always add this when filling out your resume.First of all, when you are writing about script in resume software, you need to learn more about computer programming languages such as C++, Perl, Java, Python, and others. These are the languages that an engineer uses when creating computer programs. When you are writing about standard software, you will only need to fill out the fields for your resume with their name, title, and location.This is great advantage for people who do not know these languages. You can always include this in your resume with your current job and education. So if you are a computer programmer, you can easily say that you are interested in scripting in resume software for your resume.But I don't know if it's a good idea for you to put in information about a programming language like C++ in your resume unless you are writing about the things that only engineers can do. You can also add these programming languages in your resume with any compu ter skills or experience that you have.You can always ask for references or an applicant's manual if you're a programmer or you're trying to become one. This will help you write about scripting in resume software or any computer related subject.It is always a good idea to learn more about any field that you are applying for. You can always use this information in your resume so that you can speak about yourself and your qualifications. This will also help you add scripts in resume software in your resume or use a computer programmer's reference manual for programming.

The Road to Me 2.0 Presentation at MIT and Book Cover Revealed! - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Ive been thinking about when to start promoting my book, and lets face it, I already have. The one big detail I havent revealed is the cover or the structure of the book. The official title of my book is called Me 2.0: Build a Powerful Brand to Achieve Career Success. Ive spoke about how I got my book deal and how fate has led to me write this book. Ive also mentioned the idea behind the title Me 2.0, why I decided to write it and showcased two recent interviews Ive had with Entrepreneur and BusinessWeek on concepts in the book. My presentations now and in the future Im starting to present to colleges again and decided that my presentation would be called Me 2.0. I actually built my presentation with the look, feel and actual cover of the book, which is the first slide in the slideshare below. A lot of people question upcoming.org, but I promoted the event on it and a few people came after seeing it! My first stop on my book tour was MIT I would like to thank SUMA (Sloan Undergraduate Business Association) who set this event up. It was also great to share the stage with Carla Blumenthal, who gave a solid presentation on the fundamentals of blogging, as it leads to success after college. [slideshare id=718466doc=mit-presentation-1225761014372899-8w=425] View my other slideshows Slide 2: If youve ever heard me speak, I always like sharing the pain points first, such as the economic crisis, social network background checks, a slow job growth for recent grads, and the fact that most people hate their jobs. I, of course, point the solution to be personal branding ?? Slide 3: After defining personal branding to the audience (how we market ourselves to others), I brought up pictures of four celebrity brands: Oprah, Britney, P Diddy and Paris Hilton. They had to describe each of them using one personal brand attribute. Slide 4: I really enjoy talking about how my book title parallels web 2.0. I first define web 1.0 and me 1.0 and then web 2.0 and me 2.0. The difference is that we can now stand in front of our corporate brands and be heard. Slide 5: The next slide you might be familiar with. The difference now is that its fully built out, with all the issue of my magazine and the book cover. The background color of the book is blue, yet appears greenish in this picture. I like to inspire people and tell them what they COULD accomplish by participating in social media. Slide 6: Blogging 101 gives you the basic of how to properly configure your blog and market it effectively in the first 6 months. In my longer presentation, I have a Twitter 101, Facebook 101 and LinkedIn 101. Ill probably unleash that next Thursday when I speak to University of Massachusetts. Slide 7: This is the infamous money slide, where I demonstrate that personal branding online isnt just about self-promotion. Whats just as important these days, is career and life protection! I offer a few sites that people must claim their name on now, or be punished later on. Slide 8: This slide used to be much different. It used to be just a globe and I felt that sent the wrong message to people. The right message is that IT IS a brand YOU world, but you need to populate it (be the chief people officer) with people who share similar interests, but have different skills. In order to be successful, you have to make other people successful first. That is the key! Also, you get to hand select who is in your world.

Why the capital letters? Because SMARTER is an acrostic a word with letters that when taken in order spell out an easy-to-remember phrase. Sandler Success Principles became an instant Amazon bestseller last week, in part because Sandler’s SMARTER acrostic is famous for changing the lives of people who have taken Sandler Training. SMARTER turns out to be, a smarter way to set and reach goals in your career and business. What’s does SMARTER stand for? A goal that is: S = Specific M = Measurable A = Attainable R = Relevant T = Time-bound E = Enjoyable R = Rewarding See how easy it is to remember Sandler’s method of goal-setting? And, that’s not even one of the 11 major insights in Sandler Success Principles. Personally I love Reach Back and After Burn (more about those next week). But, SMARTER is super sticky â€" easy to remember. Acrostic 101 Why would YOU want an acrostic? An acrostic would make you “sticky.” It makes a whole phrase or idea memorable. And stickiness is exactly what YOU need, when it comes to messaging your personal brand (what you mean), your solution (what you sell) and your business’ brand (what your organization stands for). What if you aren’t sticky? If we can’t remember you, then when that perfect opportunity comes across our desk: we’ll give it to someone else â€" someone we can remember, or who called at the magical moment when we needed to pay someone well to do something grand (your perfect opportunity). You miss out, if we don’t have a refrain in our brain that’s stuck in our minds about you, as the ideal person to hire for this opportunity. How do you get an acrostic? You could create one using your name. For example, let’s call you Ben, an engineer in nanotechnology, looking for an investment in a budding start-up or perhaps, a new job. You’d introduce yourself at a networking event, by saying, “I’m Ben Frank. You can remember me by remembering this phrase: Best Engineer in Nanotechnology â€" that’s Ben: B for best E for engineer, and N for nanotechnology.” Finish that off by saying your whole name: “That’s me, Ben. Ben Frank. Excuse the pun, but frankly, Im the best engineer in nanotechnology.” (The bold is for emphasis). Then, present your business card â€" with your acrostic spelled out on the back of it. Of course, it’s corny! And it works! (BTW, notice the repetition try to get in at least three impressions of your name in your introduction). Almost anything you do can be made into an acrostic. That makes it easy for us to remember you and associate your unique qualities with your brand. So take what you have: your name, your personal brand’s values, your company name, your product or service, your motto or anything else that will make us know and love you â€" and leverage it as a way for us to remember you. I got up really early and saw that it was snowing out (with lots of snow already on the ground). Looking out through my fogged windows I thought I spotted something different in my front yard. Yes, there was something different! Someone had placed several life-size Reindeer figures in our yard. I was so excited, I remember running into my parents room to tell them and to ask if I could go outside to see the Reindeer. My parents were as surprised as I was, but I needed to wait until my older sister was ready before I could go out. While waiting for my sister (she always took forever to get ready), someone rang our doorbell. I heard someone tell my father that they had delivered the Reindeer to the wrong house and were now going to take them away. I was so disappointed, even opening my presents did not cheer me up that Christmas Day. Certainly not having a job on Christmas (or whatever holiday you may celebrate) can be disappointing (to say the least). And while Im sure some people will wake on Christmas Day with a recently acquired new job, most job hunters will likely have to wait until the New Year. While most people think that the end of November through the end of December is the worst time to look for a job, in reality it is an excellent time to look for a job. Less competition will get you closer to the top of the pile and all of the work you put into job hunting will start to pay off as the new year starts (and new budgets are in place). 5 tips to a successful long-distance job search Last week was a big week for me for media interviews. I was honored to be contacted by each of these publications. Here is an article I was happy to be featured in by USNews.com, How to Turn a Long-Distance Job Search Into a New Long-Term Job. I wanted to share some tips with you and some additional advice as well… Mentally prepare for the potential obstacles in this type of job search. The potential employer may prefer someone local. You need to understand how you can stand out from the crowd and market yourself as the best choice given that you’re far away. Realize that your distance could actually give you an advantage, an expanded network, a new perspective on a different market or location. Be prepared to mention that in an interview, if it applies to the industry that you are looking in. Be prepared to negotiate. To be realistic, you may need to be willing to bend on their relocation package if needed. Consider moving yourself if you really want the job and this is a sticking point for example. Make sure youve estimated finances correctly and the cost of living for the new location before looking at that location and the average salaries for the jobs in your industry in that area.
